CR. BERRIDGE IN REPLY TO MR BRADLEY.

Just before proceeding with the ordinary business of the County Council on Wednesday Cr. Berridge said he wished to make an explanation re the case of Mr George Bradley and the Hospital claim. If he (Or. Berridge) had ■aid that Mr Bradley was receiving £2 per week all the time he was in the hospital then he had made a mistake. He was busy at the time the question came up and he may not have made himself clear. What he intended to say was that he had received £2 per -week while the contract was going on. As far as he could learn Mr Bradley was in the hospital about two months while the contract was in progress, and while there had received £4O or thereabouts as proceeds from the contract. Of this sum there must have been at least £l6 over and above what was due to him for his work as his mates gave him full share for the two months he was in the hospital. Cr. Harding said he had been taken to task for not suppressing the letter from the New Plymouth Hospital authorities to this County Council. He was sorry that any one should have suggested to him tho suppression of a letter from one public body to another. He would be unworthy cf his position if he did euch a thing. Cr. Berridge said that the Charitable Aid question had become a serious one, and when he saw a claim come in from a quarter where £I2OO had twice been refused for the property he thought it was time to speak out. Other Councillors approved of the course taken and thought too much had been made of it outside the Council, The matter then dropped.
