NORTHERN WAIROA RACING CLUB.
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual race meeting of the above Club was held on Monday and Tuesday last in spite of the opposition of the Metropolitan Club. The steamer, Kopuru, started fioin Tokatoka on Monday morning and calliugin at the various wharves landed a full complement of passengers at Dargaviile. The races were held on the Dargaviile course and the dust was very unpleasant. The attendance of the public was very large on Monday and on Tuesday fairly good. The number of starters averaged nearly four in each race although some races only brought two horses to the post. The general opinion is that all the running was straight for the money so that iu tlus respect there was a decided improvement upon last year. The Natives were present in large numbers, more so than the pakehas, and the hotels found a difficulty in providing dinners for all comers. Gambling of course was prevalent, the totulisaior being well patronised. There was also a good deal of drunkenness about, one poor woman lying on the ground thought she had paralysis alb down one side, The following are the results of the different races t FIRST DAY, Hrjtnr.Ks.—Malabar 1, Gipsy 2, Black--1 bird 3. No other s<aiders. Won osdiv. , Jl,\cr C Rack. —This brought out a good field of eight skirlers. Scott 1, Zanzibar N. Wairoa Cue. Four aim b Pakeha 1, Larrikin 2, Holly 3. Maiden Prate. Four starters. Scott 1, Skylark 2, Zanzibar 3. Railway Plate. —Three starters. Pakeha 1, Holly 2, Bravo y. Gumdiggishs’ Purse. —Fou r starters, Pakeha 1, Scott 2, Malabar o. SECOND DAY. Hurdles. —-Three starters, Malabar 1, Gipsy Maid 2, Blackbird 3. Kaipaba Handicap.—Throe starters. Larrikin 1, Pakeha 2 Holly 3. Larrikin and Holly bolted round the Cup distance and delayed the race for some time. The former won easily. Publicans’ Purse.—Two starters. Malabar 1, Scott 2. Hack Race, —Eight starters. Zanzibar 1. Flying Stakes. —-Two starters. Pakeha 1, Bravo 2. The most successful horse was Pakeha which belonged to Mr Jarvie of Kawerua. It was ridden by C. Morgan Malabar who was also fairly successful belonged to Kaiwaka and was ridden by Ross. Of the local j horses Scott was the most prominent but none of them parried off very much.
