The Pope declares Freemasonry to be Satanic, and asserts that it aims at replacing Christianity by naturalism. A passenger train from Bendigo to Melbourne broke away from the engine. A boy bravely crawled along the footboard and applied brakes in the van, thus bringing the train to a standstill. The Admirably has decided to court-martial Admiral Fairfax, who had charge of H.M. s. Howe when she stranded. The Pall Mall Gazette declares that the Home Rule Bill is based on the line? of the Actgranting a representative constitution to New Zealand in 1852. Extraordinary measures are being taken, to ensure secrecy with regard to the Home Rule proposals of the Government. The death of Stewart the pugilist, was caused by laceration and compression of the brain. A remarkable freetrade demonstration was held in the Town Hall Melbourne thousands being unable to gain admission. Sir Henry Parkes met with an enthusiastic reception. Resolutions were passed welcoming the victory of the Democratic party in the United States, and also affirming the adoption of intercolonial freetrade to asssst the restoration of prosperity.
