CRICKET.
TATARARIKI v MANGAWHARE. These two Clubs met on Saturday on the Mangawhare ground. The Tatarariki players and friends were conveyed up river in the s. s. Kopuru which was well patronised, especially by the ladies. Several others took the road for it so that there was a good attendance of spectators on the field. Tatarariki went first to the wickets, Beale and Harding taking up the bowling. Rice made a good stand; after the first few strokes he gathered confidence and played very well for his 22 runs. The innings closed for 57 and Mangawhare looked well in it. Brown and ford batted first for the home team and
were not separated till the score had reached 20, when Ford was run out. Then three wickets fell without any addition to the score and the innings closed for 38, or 19 behind Tatarariki. No less than four of the losers wore run out and two of the winning team. Mr A. E. Harding was a martyr to umpire’s l.b. w. The scores were:— Tatarariki c c. T. Bassett b Beale 1 F. Miller 13 3 4 88 Elliott 9 2 30 Legge 10 3 5 55 All the players on the Mangawhare ground last Saturday wore a bit of crape in token of respect for the memory of Mr J. Mumford, the veteran cricketer, who died so suddenly the previous Wednesday. Mr Mumford captained the Auckland team that played at Mangawhare some years ago against Wairoa. The Port Albert Married v. Single cricket match was concluded on the 13th inst. and resulted in a win for the Benedicts by 39 runs. There was only a difference of three runs in the first innings, but in the second the young men only reached 23 runs and lost as above. The Selection Committee of the Cricket Association have chosen the following players to represent Auckland against Otago on the 29th and 30th of this month :J. N. Fowke, W. Gardiner, J. T. Harkness, J. R. Lundon, D. Meldrum, D. Miller, T. A. Moresby, R. Neill, T. Neill, W. Sterason, R. J. Yates. Emergencies : Bowler, F. V. Kelly ; batsman, T. H. Wilson. The Gordon C. C. team ran up a splendid core of 364 runs, against Parnell on Saturday ; N. Williams 106 and Meldrum 83 were the chief scorers and both were run out.
