MARERETU.

[ritOM OTJK O WN CORRESPONDENT]. The preparations for the forthcoming * Otamatea Pastoral and Agricultural Association’s ’ first annual show to be held at Maungaturoto on the 3rd March; 1893, are now properly inaugurated. The Association have issued their preliminary posters. In the agricultural department they are offering about one hundred and eighty prizes for exhibits ranging from a blood horse to the best half dozen hen eggs. In the industrial line over fifty prizes are offered ; this department is entirely under the management of an executive committee composed of ladies, who (1 am informed) are working like Trojans to make this department a success. So far the prospects of a successful show are most satisfactory. The committee are to be congratulated upon obtaining an able and painstaking gentleman for secretary in the person of Mr W. Chadwin. The Paparoa people hold their Show on the first of March, and with an enterprising secretary like Mr W. Hook, the success of their show is assured. I hear that a few people consider that these districts cannot maintain two agricultural associations, but I think that notion •will prove incorrect. I regret to say that there are a few people who are endeavouring for some incomprehensible reason to create a spirit of rivalry between the two associations, but I trust this feeling will not be allowed to take root, for by working harmoniously together they can be of great assistance to each other. . Mr C. H. Jenkins has been appointed trustee of the Mareretu cemetery. He informs me that he intends to have the ground cleared and fenced. The omnipresent Cupid has been shooting his arrows again, and has made another ' bull s eye’ in this neighbourhood. At the last meeting of the Otamatea oounty Council, Mr John Isbister was again re-elected Chairman; | 'Shearing is now completed, and settlers are waiting for the utu to arrive.
