PORT ALBERT.
[from our own correspondent.! The exhibition is now a thing of the past, and the promoters are to be congratulated on the successful issue of their labours. On the last day the attendance was only moderate, but that was only to he expected, and with all due deference to the gentlemen composing the committee, I think two days ample On Saturday there was a very large attendance, even more than on the first day. The takings for the three days amounted to the respectable sum of £46 ; not bad in these hard times for a country district where the people are bo scattered. On Saturday a good musical programme was presented, our leading talent coming forward and doing their best to make the evening pleasant, and judging by the happy faces to be seen in the ball, I am sure they were successful. The first item on tlie programme was an instrumental piece by Miss Sandian of Helensville, a pupil of Herr Carl Schmidt of Auckland. This was a very good performance. The next was a glee, sweet and low, by the Port Albert glee club. Mr C. Webb, of Wairoa. then came forward and recited in good style ‘ The Hostage,’ and received wellmerited applause, and later cn by request, gave ‘ Christmas in the Workhouse.’ Then followed a pianoforte duett by Mr G. Nicholson and Miss Booth. This young lady is quite an enthusiast in the musical line and is sure to become quite a favourite and in request at our concerts, as we are at times, quite at a loss for an accompanyist; ‘The Bugler,’ Mr Hosking ; glee, by the glee club ; song, ‘ Margureita,’Mr C. Walker. This brought tbo exhibition to a close and all went home well pleased. On Sunday December 4th Mr Glover preached in the hall and was favoured with a good congregation . On Monday he gave a lecture on uood templarism, being the accredited lecturer for the Good Templar body. There were about fiuty or fifty- persons present, and after a good speech, delivered in Mr Glover’s well-known stylo, it was decided to open a Good Templars’ Dodge in the district, some dozen present giving in their names to start with. On Wednesday December 7tli ihe monthly meeting of our Agrii ultural Society was held at the residence of Mr J. Beecroft. r J hejsubjeet for the evening’s discussion was the Codlin Moth, which is posting the fruis growers all over the colony at the present time. There was a considerable amount of business in connection with the forthcoming Show, and the report of the collector who had sent to Auckland to obtain subscriptions ; the report proved highly gratifying to the meeting. The delegate sent to the Conference of Agricultural Societies held in Auckland last mouth gave a report of the meeting which proved that there was good reasons for the farming community to combine and protect themselves. The Chairman then called on
Mr Beecroft to read his paper on the Codlin Moth. He began by saying that hehadcurtailed it as he thought there would he plenty other business. He said this pest was introduced into the colony some six or eight years ago, but did not reach here till last year. The habits of this dear little thing were also described and the writer gave several remedies which would keep them in check for a time. The paper was very good, the essayist having had a good deal to do with the subject, spoke from personal experience. The next meeting is to he held in January at the residence of Mr Underwood, the subject for discussion is Potatoes,
