The Wariroa Bell, AND Hobson Couty Gazette. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 16th.

We are glad to learn that the storekeepers of Aratapu and Te Kopuru have come to a decision to make Saturday afternoon the weekly half-holiday instead of Wednesday. This question has been a vexed one in nearly ail centres, and opinion seems very much divided between Wednes day and Saturday as the most suitable day. This lack of unanimity has arisen not because it was difficult to ascertain which was the most suitable day for the holiday, for very few will gainsay that the Saturday is the best for the holiday. Employees are almost unanimous on this point and if loft to them the matter would be speedily settled. It seems a real holiday to look forward to when one leaves work at mid-day on Saturday and has several hours before him for unalloyed pleasure, and then a day of quiet rest to follow. But it has been so long the custom for shopkeepers to have a long day on Saturday that they seem to fear a loss by closing on that afternoon and evening. This will, we think, not be the case, and we would ask the public to support those who are falling in with the general wish by making Saturday the close half holiday. We have felt a sort of pity for those who of late kept holiday on Wednesday for they seemed at a loss what to do with themselves with so little company. The Saturday afternooners as well as others will welcome the change now agreed upon and we congratulate the people of Aratapu and Kopuru on the change announced We hope that before long the up-river people will follow the example now set them, for it will, we feel sure, be welcomed by all employees, and after a time prove quite as convenient for business purposes. The same day for all parts of the river will add much to the success of all sports and pleasure parties, and prevent the disarrangement of business which special attractions on Saturday afternoons sometimes cause.
