LECTURE AT TE KOPURU BY REV. J. BLIGHT.
A lecture and entertainment was given in the TeKopuru Hall on Tuesday evening. The proceeds being devoted to the purchase of literature for the Te Kopuru Sunday School. There was a very good attendance, the moderate charge of sixpence being made for admission. Mr A. Barclay occupied the chair and in his opening remaiks said that the object of the meeting was to raise funds for the purchase of periodicals, such as the British Workman, Band of Hope, etc., for distribution among the children. An entertainment usually supplied them with funds sufficient for two years. Mr Simpkin and the members of his family rendered several vocal pieces in a very pleasing manner during the course of the evening, and the Kopuru Brass Band rendered valuable assistance by playing several selections outside the hall before the proceedings inside began. Miss M. Simpkin was loudly applauded for her two most excellent songs. Mr H. Buchanan also contributed two songs and was deservedly encored for his rendering of ‘ The Bridge.’ Two youuger Misses Simpkin sang the duet ‘ Sweet Chiming Bells,’ and Miss Boult and Mr Welham gave a very pleasing duett (piano and violin). Miss Hougham followed in a recitation, ‘ The Dream of the Reveller.’ Rev. Joseph Blight then delivered a lecture on John B. Gough, the Temperance orator. His illustrations of the comical side of Gough’s lectures were very good; they kept the audience in roars of laughter and gave a vivid idea of Gough’s powers as a humourist. Miss Mitchell, of Arapohue, played the organ accompaniments, assisted by Mr Welham on the violin,
