THE RAINFALL AFFECTED BY TRANSPIRATION,
A Sunflower plant high, weighing 31bs,, and with a surface of 5,616 square
inches, gives off a pint of water per diem ; a cabbage plant with 2,736 square inches, 1 9 fluid ounces ; a lemon tree with 2,557 square inches, 6 fluid ounces. We can now readily understand that the moisture of the atmosphere is affected very largely by its trees. Many cases have been known where the cutting down of trees has well nigh stopped the rainfall, We are glad to learn that some of our wisest colonial authorities, in districts where this has taken place, are speculating as to the advisability of compelling by law all landowners to plant each vcai-, and keep alive, a certain number of trees on their property, It will be a wise law, and ndd muck to the comfort of the people, and the value of the land.
