The Wairoa Bell, AND Hobson County Gazette. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 21st.
Mr Wordsworth has kindly sent the full contents of the crop of the bird which Mr Kitching introduced to the notice of the members of the N. W. Agricultural and Pastoral Association at their last meeting. None of those present were able to recognise the bird and we believe it has not yet been identified. Mr Kitcliing’s observations led him to pronounce the bird insectivorous and this is fully borne out by the contents of the crop. In it there is no trace whatever of vegetable matter, the contents being composed entirely of the legs, wings and other parts of insects. We regret to learn that three of these birds have now been destroyed for they are not numerous in this district at least, and being so unmistakably insectivorous should be protected rather than destroyed. Mr A. E, Harding, County Chairman, will be in town next week and will endeavour to have the bird identified.
