AUCKLAND LIBERAL ASSOCIATION.
There was a good attendance at the Liberal Association Chambers last evening, Mr W. Beehan presiding. A considerable amount of correspondence was dealt with, and six new members were elected. The following resolution was unanimously' passed :—“ That this Association is of opinion that strong opposition should be shown to the petition of Mr G-. S. Cooper, praying Parliament for a further sum of public money in addition to his pension of £533 3s 3d yier- annum; and also that no public money should be given to the widow of the late Sir Harry Atkinson, while there are unemployed and deserving poor in distress in the colony'.” Resolution to be forwarded to city members and the Premier. A special meeting was ordered for next Monday evening to take into consideration the following notice of motion :—That this Association regrets that under the proposed Land Bill, in the system of leasing for 999 years, no provision is made for revaluation at stated periods, and that consequently the unearned increment will be almost wholly lost to the nation.” The following is a copy of a letter sent to the Right Hon. W. E. Gladstone, similar letters being sent to the Marquis of Salisbury and the editor of the ‘ London Daily' News’: —“ Auckland. New Zealand, August 29, 1592 To the Right Hon. W. E. Gladstone, Premier of England. Sir,- —The Auckland Liberal Association begs to write to you with reference to the telegraphic congratulations sent to y r on by r the New Zealand Government on the great victory which the Liberal party- in England achieved at the recent general election. In telegraphing their congratulations, the New Zealand Ministry expressed the sentiments of an overwhelming majority of the people of Nov Zealand. We understand that a small coterie of Auckland Tories, styling themselves ‘ The National Association of New Zealand,’ have expressed to you in writing their objection to the action of the, New Zealand Government upon this subject. We beg to assure you, sir, that those few Tories who constitute the so-called National, Association of New Zealand,’ do not represent, either upon this or any' other question, the enlightened opinion of this country. Hoping that you will crown a glorioxxs career by' conferring adequate self-governing powers ujxm Ireland, we are, sir, for the Auckland Liberal Association, W. Beehan (Chairman), W Jennings (Secretary).” —‘ Star.’
