DARGAVILLE LIBRARY AND READING ROOM.

Report of the Dargaville Library and lb:r,clingRoom for the year ending 3.lst July, LS92. To the Sul Tibet's. Ladies and G entlem -- The Committee of the ! : Room have much pleasure in »übmitung to you the Report and Statement of Accounts for "the year ending July 31st, 1892. The first duty of your committee was to open the tenders for the position of Librarian, which had been received previous to the last annual meeting. You are aware that Mr H. E. Ford was appointed to the office, aud has performed his duties satisfactorily. The income from subscriptions for the year has been £SO Os 9d, being an increase of £3 15s 9d on that of the previous rrnar. By the purchase of the Mount Eden Library, 320 additional works have been placed On the shelves, aud 200 worn out volumes have been renewed. The cost of these books, including freight, was £25 9s 3d, while some 300 volumes of dulplicates and magazines were sold for £8 6s 6d, making the net cost £l6 2s 9d. Taking into consideration the durable "binding of many of these books, the committee is satisfied that the money could not have been better spent. The re-cataloguing of the Library has involved a good deal of labour. It has, however, been well done, and the printed catalogues should be permanent. To prevent the Library falling into confusion, this committee would strongly urge any future committee to renew the works of popular authors as may he needed. A portion of each year’s income devoted to this object, would add greatly to the utility and popularity of the Library. Now that the catalogue is printed, readers might assist in keeping the Library in order by using the catalogue when choosing hooks. The practice of removing hooks from the shelves entails much unnecessary labour on the Librarian, and frequent disappointment to readers who fail to obtain what they seek, through the book being misplaced. The "thanks of the subscribers are due to the owners of the turntable which formeily stood at the Bank corner for the gift, through Messrs Mitchelson Bros, of £3 and a valuable atlas suitably inscribed; to Mr F. J. Dargaville who has given the ‘ Northern Advertiser,’ and his services as auctioneer ; to Messrs Barstow and Wilson for the gift of the Herald, Star and Review of Reviews ; to Mr J. Mitchelson for the Sporting Review ; to Mr Walters for his attention to outside subscribers, and to Messrs Fail, Forde, Chiplin and Broadhurst for help in compiling the catalogue.— Tom Wilson, Secretary, D.L., and R.R.
