Our Maropiu correspondent writes : “ Your contemporary in reporting the Dargaville- Maropiu Football match last week waxes jubilant over the victory of the former team. “ Skill and pluck too much for strength and weight.” Oh ! indeed, to say nothing of the referee. (By the bye when did Ivopuru beat Aratapu ?) No mention is made in the report of tho fact that Maropiu had but twelve men in the field. To admit of this would no doubt spaoil the effect of the victory. Panapa secured a try for Maropiu sait-h the report: considering that there are three Panapas in the team this is very indefinite, but the fact is that it was Ti Ilira who crossed the liue.” The Probables v. Possibles match on Saturday was not as interesting as it might have been, owing to the absence of some players and the refusal of others to play. Mr W. Phelan was tho referee. Tho two teams were :—• Probables, —-A. Smith, Morrison, Rutland. J. F. Smith, Len Kitching, Morgan, Absolum, Bassett, Veale, F. Molloy, Keegan, Woollam, T. Keane, Ross, and Bonella. Possibles. —Lionel Kitching, Plammond, A. Johnston, T. Elliott, Jamieson, Nolan, Tidmarsh, J. Elliott. Joe and C. Molloy, Fiavell, E. Phelan, G. Nield, Horspool and A. Keane. Len Kitching by following up got over the line soon after kick off, and again from a pass from Morgan, and A. Smith converted. Absolum next scored at corner flag. F, Molloy secured a try and then Len got another which Smith converted. The Probables thus won by 16 points to nothing. The Possibles however made a good fight of it. A. Smith made a good full-back and placed two goals. This player should be entrusted with the place kicking. The captain should settle in his mind who is the best place kick and then stick to the best. T. Elliott played a greatly improved game and did a lot of good work. Tidmarsh picked out the water holes well, and played a hard useful game and at one time was very near scoring. J. Elliott was the pick of the Possible forwards although others pushed him close. Mr T. Day has presented the Kopuru F.C. with a bannerette bearing the Club monogram on one side and a circular saw on the other. Mr John Harrison is having a flao- made for presentation to the Kopuru Club. The Dargaville—Maropiu match was not such a glorious achievement as our contemporary would have people believe, See what a Maropiu correspondent says.. Thompson and E. Dargaville scored a try each for the former and Te Hira scored for Maropiu, four to two being the scores. The Waima (Hokianga) footballers arrived at Maropiu on Tuesday and played a game with Maropiu on Wednesday. They come on to Parore’s settlement today by train and play their match with Aratapu tomorrow afternoon at Aratapu. The visitors with two exceptions are Natives and judging from, those we have seen from that district the match is likely to be a close one. On thi* occasion Aratapu will be represented by the same team that played against Kopuru in the last match. The Auckland-Thames match resulted in a win for the former by 16 points to 7. Auckland and Taranaki meet this afternoon, each province having scored two wins previously. A steamer has been chartered by the A. F. C. to leave Dargaville at 1.30 p.m. tomorrow afternoon to convey players and friends to the football match.
