ORANGE ANNIVERSARY.

The Orangemen of this district have again been before the public and m the celebration of their Anniversary have attracted a good deal of attention. Last Sunday week the annual sermon to Orangfmea was preached by Rev Blight at Aratapu in th evening, Rain fell heavily and prevented many from attending ; as it was, however, there was a good gathering many of the brethern being present in their regalia; The preacher based his remarks on the words Qtii-

ve like men ; be strong,” and after making a.few remarks bearing especially on Orangeism urged the importance of physical strength, intellectual strength and moral strength, and showed how weak and useless a man might he who possessed physical and mertal power and yet lacked moral courage. The sermon was attentively listened to and much appreciated On Thursday week a Black Preceptory was opened at Aratapu, Bros. Carnahan and Joynt having come from Auckland for the purpose. On Friday the Annual Ball took place, the same being proceeded this year by a Dramatic Entertainment by the Dramatic Club of Aratapu. Two pieces were played and both seemed to be enjoyed by those present who pretty unanimously voted them an agreeable change to the old time concert. The Club has not long been established but under the managership of Mr A. W. Jones it bids fair to become very successful. The different parts in the two short plays were very creditably sustained by each of the players. The attendance in the Hall was more crowded during the entertainment but not quite so much so during the after part as in some previous years, about eighty couples remained to the dance. Between the two parts of the entertainment Mr W. Spiers favoured the audience with some of his inimil able dancing, to the music of the violin by Mr Davy, and was enjoyed so much that he had to appear again. The dance music was supplied by Mr Mc-Callum (violin), T. Webb (piano) and Mr A. Morris (violin) and seemed to satisfy all, except perhaps the dinging of the hell which some considered monotonous. The M. C’s. were Messrs W- J. Bassett and D. G. Stephens and these kept the dancers well to it. The refreshments which were distributed without stint were provided by Mr W. Corkill in his usual excellent style and quality. The whole fete throughout was highly successful and persons were present from nil parts ranging from the Manganui Bluff to Tikinui. Some friends left Pahi in the cutter Trixie to he present hut the weather prolonged their journey and they did not arrive till next day.
