ARATAPU MUTUAL IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY.

The Aratapu Improvement Class met on Wednesday evening but football practice, gymnasium and minstrel rehearsal seemed to have absorbed the members for the attendance was very limited. The business of the evening was principally the introduction of curiosities to the notice of members. Mr T. Webb showed a spear from the Solomon Islands, an idol, and board with hieroglyhics from Santa Cruz and some other island curios which he briefly described. Mr Scott showed an albatross’ egg and gave the class an interesting account of the nature and habits of that bird, and Mr G. E. Smith recited Gray’s ‘ Country Churchyard.’ The criticisms were brief and the meeting shorter than usual. It was decided that the next meeting should be in the form of a conversational debate and the following subjects will be introduced separately for discussion :—An import duty on Island fruit, The giving of a bonus for the manufacture of dried fruit for exportation as ashed for by Mr Jackson Palmer, An import dub. .-n ■ -t ind An export duty on baulk umber.. Lite subjects are all of local present importance and it is expected that members will take them up with interest.
