The Times says that opponents of Home Rule are determined on another appeal to the country before Home Rule is allowed. Laboacbere, in Truth, advises Gladstone to postpone the Home Rule Question until Parish Councils have adopted the principle of one-man-one-vote, and a reduction is made in the terms of residence necessary for qualification, also until permission is given members to be paid their election ex penses, and Local Option has passed. He believes Irish members will be agreeable to this. A Big; Smash. The Liquidator of New Oriental Bank Corporation states that creditors’ claims amount to £4,500,000 and total assetts £3,100,000, He considers it unsafe to retkon on beyond 15s in the pound, A Good Dividend, At a meeting of the shateholers of Trust Loan Company Mr Bowen said New Zealand was slowly recovering from years eE depression and it is premature to speculate on effect of new taxation. Two-thirds of Company’s money invested in Canter bury if allowed to remain would soon regain old rate of dividend. Sir C. Clifford, chairman, Mr P. Damages are estimated at £1,300 Insurance only £4OO. Sydenham Licensing - Cases. Judge Denniston lias delivered judgment in Sydenham Licensing cases, deciding against the committee as follows: “ Having to answer question as to action of Committee lean answei itin only one way I think circumstances show the majority of Committee were unable to bring judicial mind to consideration of question . Have in fact decided on what is called prohibition lines without due consideration of actual requirements of district. Think therefore plaintiff entitled to writ of certiorari to bring up quaslii certificate. Ido not see how in view taken of case I can do other than order cost of proceedings to be paid by those members of committee who have appeared tothe motion. ’ Kauri Timber Company Pushing Trade. The Kauri Timber Company are pushing their Sydney business and increasing engine power to 110 horse power nominal. 1 They are selling in Sydney T and G flooring at 12s per hundred feet superficial, which compels Baltic sawmillers to sell at a loss. The Company can turn out a million and a half of timber monthly, and are availing themselves of a large amount of tonnage now offered them by Sydney and Melbourne brokers. Additional salesmen and office staff are being engaged in Syduey to cope with the increased business. The Financial Debate^ The debate on the Financial Statement is still continuing. Scobie MacKenzie made a trenchant attack on the Government and was replied to by W. L. Rees, who made one of his brilliant sarcastic speeches. The Sharemarket; The Sharemarket yesterday was very brisk. New Alburnias being sold to 3s 9d; other stock is increasing in sympathy. Produce Markets General Markets are decidedly dull. Cheese is very firm up to 7d for mild and rich, Butter Is 3d, Eggs Is. Maize, old, strong local and Sydney demand at 2s 43. New qualities not appreciated.
