£3,385,051 £6,604,154 A telegram from Wellington to the Auckland Star says :— *■ In connection with the arrival at Auckland of fifty Austrians who propose to go gumdigging, my attention has been drawn to a singular statement that is to be found in a three volume-book entitled ‘ The Voyage of the Novaro,' an Austrian man-o’-war, which visited Auckland on a tour round the world under royal command some twenty years ago. Referring to the visit to Auckland, Mr Scherson, the author, says : —‘ During our researches we came repeatedly upon whole tracts of resin (kauri gum) fields, which were covered several feet thick with this stuff,’ This is from an official book published by the Austrian Government, and may have had something to do with attracting the new arrivals.
