British elections. The general elections in Great Britain aie creating unparalleled ex«tement. Party journals on both sides are expressing confidence in the final result. So far as can be gathered Home Rulers have gained a few seats, but not nearly sufficient to give them a majority in the House. Amongst the most notable membvrs returned up to the present are the following Conservatives and Unionists—Balfour, Sir Edward Clarke, Sir James Fergusson. Joseph Chamberlain, Sir Henrv James, Matthews, Goschen, Arnold, Foster, (defeating Sexton for VYest Belfast), Colonel Saundorson, Baden Powell and Baron Worms. The Gladstonian Hume Rule, Labour side have returned ...John Burns (Battersea), W. Allen (son Mr W S. Allen), Sir George Trevelyan, J. P. •O’Connor, and Dr. Wallace. W. O’Brien’s sight is affected by the injuries he received during ’the election riot at Cork. N. Z, Parliament and Compensation to Publicans. Parliament yesterday decid d by a narr ow majority on a side issue, against the question of compensating publicans who have lost their licenses. The Premier spoke strongly in favour of the proposal but some other Ministers are opposed so it is unlikely to be made a Government measure. Subsidies to Local Bodies The Auckland Council at their meeting yesterday strongly objected to the proposed withdrawal of subsidies to local bodies. If subsidies be withdrawn the rates will require to be increased and they are judged to be already high enough. It was determined to communicate with Mayor Crowther, who is now in Wellington, asking him u> interview Auckland members on the subject. Rangitikei Election. The Rangitikei election takes place today and it is generally thought that Bruce, the Opposition candidate, will be successful. Speaker for Legislative Council. The election of a (Speaker lor the Legislative Council, for which a call of the House was made for today, is expected to be a close contest between the Hons George Me Lean and Miller. Dr, Pollen refused nom ination. A Melbourne CrashThe Chairman ct the Investigation Committee of the Real Estate Bank, Melbourne, says that the Bank was hopelessly insolvent two years ago, and shareholders must face the deficiency of one million sterling.
