PORT ALBERT.
[F$pM otm OWN correspondent]. The Mutual Improvement Society met the usual time and place on Saturday June 4th the president being in the chair. The attendance owing to the threatening -weather was father poor, but those present made up with enthusiasm. The following programme was then gone through ;—lnstrumental piece, Miss Hartnell ; reading, ‘ Clerk Muggins,’ Mr R ; Walker / reading, ‘What Constitutes a Lady,’ . Miss Steyentpn ; recitation, ‘Seven Ages’— Shakespeare, *Mr R. Partington ; reading, Mr L. P. Beecroft ; impromptu speeches : some of the subjects causing great laughter. The monthly meeting of the Band of Hope took place in the chapel on Tuesday June 7th. Mr J. Shepherd, the president, was in the chair. , The attendance was fair and more attention W&6 given to performers than is usually the case. The meeting was opened by singing a hymn, after Whieh the chairman engaged in prayer, and then jfave.a short speech. The other items were—Recitation. O'ive Gubb ; reading, ‘ The Rum'Seller,’ Mr<- K . ~ 1 ' Miss May Dudding and Miss Lousia si rice; reading, ‘ Good for Evil.’ Mr Steventon ; reading, Mr P. Beecroft. entitled ‘ Betsey’; reading, ‘The Shoeblack,’ Miss Beecroft ; speech, Mr J. Beecroftrecitation, ‘ The Little Thief,’ Mr C. Judd.- ‘ ‘ ' When reading the report in the Bell of the meeting held to form, an Agricultural Society, I saw that obe of the speakers said that he did not want a Society that held one meeting in a year like thp,Port'A jbert and one or two more Societies that he could name. Now the Port Albert Society, meets once every month and ’ htflds disCtuisrohs on different subjects. '' 'Off Junefltfi; the'monthly meeting • of-.-tbe-.Por.t* Albert Agricultural Society was _ held the residepce of Mr A, Worker, Wellsford, but there were only a few present, which was a pity as the subject for the evening was What is the best class of sheep for the district ? This is-an important matter to the settlers in . this district as the farms are small and it is desired to keep a few, so they must be the best. The discussion that followed was an animated one. The general, opinion seemed to lean toward the Lincoln and Merino, or the Lincoln and Shropshire Down, while some of the speaker* favoured the cross between the Lincoln and Roinnet Marsh. 'i he next meeting of the Society is to be held on the 6th July at Mr R. Walker’s residence, and the subject will be Permanent Pastime. lam sorrpr to report that Mr E, McCartney well knbwti on the Wan-on. especially at Ara- . tapu, was killed at the Little Barrier Island, where he' went with Messrs Brown and Legge .to get outcome kauri timber.' No particulars have yet been received I will send further information by next hr aif. Footballeis' will be sorry to hear that Mr Hurst of Port Albert will be unable to play for some time as be.met with an accident , his horse coining, down with him, but we are pleased to bear thq,t.he is getting about again.
