PORT ALBERT.

[FROM OUR OWN COBKIiSPOWDEiNT]. The Mutual Improvement Society met for its usual weekly meeting on Saturday, the vicepresident, Mr G. B. Held, being m the chair. The attendance was much better than it has been for the last two or three meetings, bongs were given by Mr C. Judd, Miss Grice and Miss Flatt ; readings by Mrs and Mr P. Beecroft; recitations by Mrs B. M. Gubb, Mi E. Turner, and Mr E. Hartnell. , On Monday May 30th a Tea Concert and Dance was held here in the Temperance Hall to celebrate the twenty-ninth anniversary of the Albertland Settlement. There was a very good attendance close.on two hundred sitting down to tea and ranking the good things disappear. A short time after the tables were cleared away and the seats adjusted to the satisfaction of all parties, including the small fry, who* had a platform all to themselves. The Rev. Mr Worker took the chair irud called on Messrs Nicholson and Webster to iplay an Instrumental selection and a very good one it was, then followed the Chairman’s speech which was listened to with great attention, particularly when he referred to the arrival of the first settlers when they were living in whares, .some of them very much open to the weather. Then Mrs Beecroft and friends gave the glee, * Roses Bed,’ in a very good style. Mr G. Nicholson, in the absence of Mr Yrmitage, wieldiDg the Conductor’s baton in a very efficient manner. Miss Dudding next favoured the audience with a song, ‘ lit for Tat,’ in a very pleasing manner and was deservedly encored Speech by Ml’ Trench who was very _ quaint and humourous ; «dee ‘ Memory of the Past,’ choir; Instrumental music, Messrs Nicholson and Webster ; Speech by the Rev. Griffith which was very interesting, when he threw out a suggestion to the prpmoteus of these gatherings, that they get some ot the younger uoncoufoi, bS to give -, speech at the*,., meetings, bony. R, oks-u. ... ’ m G-- J ’'i „.u, Deep,’ Mr G. Nicholson ; g«, ‘ Merry bpiuugtime’ choir; Mrs J. Shepherd gave a list ot the passengers that came out in the ship Hanover which proved very interesting, showing that a o-reat number were still in the land of the living Song, Miss May D«4fling ; quartette, Messrs G. Nicholson, IH, P., and X- P. Beecroft. Mi B. 81. iGnbb then came forward and in a few well chosen, words, proposed a hearty, ypte of thanks to all the, friends who so kindly assisted to make the concert ft success, and thought the young men deserved a special vote of thanks for the way they assisted the young ladies at the tables, This was seconded by Mr Steven,tog who, in a tew words, related some of the hair breads escapes they had in gef ting to the Township.
