ARAPOHUE.

[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT' 1 The telephone to connect our district with the rest of advanced civilisation, is not yet an accomplished fact, but it would seem now to be within measureable distance. The authorities controlling such matters, have agreed to accept three years subsidy if paid in one sum in lieu of five or £3O instead of £SO. I believe the majority of subscribers will consent to this. I regret to learn that there are some having so little public spirit as to be unwilling to assist in advancing their own district and who will not subscribe a shilling, and so the greater burthen is placed on others. I think the matter was worthy of calling a public meeting If every one gave some little assistance £3O could easily be raised surely. Our enterprising storekeeper has subscribed £6 of the amount.

How easy it is often to evade an act, as O’Connel said ‘ he could drive a coach and six through any Act ever made, ’ I thought of this as I rode along arid noticed the barb wire, which it is illegal to place along a public road, but by placing it inside the posts you may thus cheat or evade the law by a very litrle. It is necessary to carry a certain number of buckets on a steamer to extinguish fire. B. C. was observed on a, recent occasion borrowing a few from a sister boat to make up the complement and to satisfy the inspector. Now' Bill this is very naughty. Buy a bucket or two and have a clear conscience even on that small matter. Another skipper says I’ve got the necessary number but they haven’t all got handles. The moral of this is, be careful what you do or say! for the Beet, has eves and ears where you little suspect. Some dogs haveheendoing mischief among sheep lately and Mr G . Dreadou has had two worried and others injured. A meeting of subscribers to the Library has just been held. There is not sufficient funds in hand to order new books till all the subscriptions are in for current year. The Secretary reported thufmany were in the habit, of retaining the bunks much beyond the allowed time, viz one month. Subscribers should endeavour to adhere to that rule and not impair the success of the library. There are a number of books which the committee intend weeding out and disposing of. A number of catalogues have been printed but so far the number sold has not covered the cost of painting. A concert is to he held in the hall next month, which will probably be notified bv advertisement.

"l hear of what looks very much like a case of cattle stealing and killing, but probably details have reached the Bell ere this Mis to be hoped sufficient evidence may be had to warrant a case in court.
