THE AUCTION AT CHRISTIE’S.
, LONDON, March 16.
The surprising total of £80,561 was realised at Christie’s by the Russian State jewels, described as the fares t cplleetion of gems brought into the auction room. They were mostly of a date from the eighteenth century, and therefore belonged to a period remov’d from the late reigning family, though the nuptial crown was used in more fecent ceremonial functions. There ’was a terrific rush, mostly of women, to the sale. After spirited bidding the crown went to a Paris buyer for £6lOO, tho bidding opening at £5OOO. More important lots were grouped together, and brought £BOOO. Other prices were: Pair of diamond bracelets, £3400; diamond necklace, £2700; green jasper snuff box, £2600; emerald and brilliant ornament, £&300; larve oval brilliant, £11,800; diamond, sapphires and pearl brooch, £7500; diamond tiara, £4200; court sword, £7OO.—(A. and N.Z.).
