OPERA. HOUSE. Last evening’s crowd was delighted with “Irene.” When Irene O’Dare, a wistfully beautiful Irish lass, lost her job she found an unexpected friend in Donald Marshall, scion of the wealthy Marshalls, who took an instant fondness for her and arranged with the ambitious proprietor of a newly established modiste’s shop to employ her as a model in return for his patronage. But when the proprietor brought his models to the Marshall home to participate in a charity fashion show, Donald discovered that she had been left behind to attend to the shop, being considered quite impossible as a mannequin by her employer. Donald has her array herself in a newly imported French creation and takes her to the affair, where she creates a sensation. Dubious as to her eligibility in her son’s set, Donald’s mother sends to'a genealogist for a report on her antecedents, but before this arrives Larry Hadley, whose unwelcome advances had once won for him the contempt of Irene, takes pleasure in spreading news as to Irene’s shopgirl past, thus strengthening the position of his sister Eleanor, between Donald and whom is a projected engagement. The report reaches Donald, and he gives it to Irene to peruse, just as his mother swoops down on her and denounces her as an imposter. Prices 2s, 1/6, 1/. Box plan at Henderson’s.
