THE BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY.

Members of the Beautifying Society are to be congratulated, not only upon the good work they have done during the past year, and upon their prospects of continuing a similar career of useful activity, but upon the enlightened standpoint from which they approached, at their annual meeting last evening, the important questions of town planning and forest conservation and restoration. In dealing with these matters, it is open to the society to extend with great benefit to the community its present co-operation with the Borough Council. As the annual report of the society bears witness, the Borough Council, much to its credit, has very cordially welcomed such ns* sistance as the society is able to offer. Without prejudice to these excellent relations, there may be no harm in suggesting that the members of the society should -do a certain amount of electioneering during the next few weeks to the end of ensuring that both Mayor and councillors are returned definitely pledged to a policy of progressive enterprise where town planning, the improvement of the water catchment area by planting or in other ways, and related matters are concerned. With regard to the catchment area, it should be possible to learn a good deal from the experience of the City of Dunedin, which probably leads the Dominion where municipal afforestation is concerned. On what it has already accomplished, the Beautifying Society is entitled to the gratitude of the community, and it is pleasant to find the finances of the society in a state which bears witness to practical appreciation on the part of the public. Praise is due not least to the lady members who do so much at the time of the annual carnival and on other occasions to enlist the financial support which makes the excellent work Oi the society possible.
