THE Wairarapa Age MORNING DAILY. WEDNESDAY, MARCH 16, 1927. THE MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.

Not much interest has been manifested yet in the forthcoming municipal elections, but a certain amount of organising work is now in progress and the position should be defined within the next few days. As may be seen from an item in our news columns today, there will be a certain amount .of new blood in the Borough Council. There is already one vacancy, due to the retirement of Mr. A. Rippon, who has recently intimated that he intends again to contest the Mayoralty, and one present member of the council, Mr. E. F. Barton has stated definitely that he does not intend to seek re-election. Mr. J. L. Murray is .offering himself as a council candidate, and there is some talk of other new Candidates coming forward. As a whole, the outlook is still rather vague, and it is not certain that a poll for the election of councillors will be necessary. A contest for the Mayoralty probably is assured. Mr. Jordan has not yet made his intentions known, but no doubt representations will be made to him urging him to seek re-election for another term. The lack of keen interest or excitement over the impending elections — now only six weeks distant—perhaps implies that the people of Masterton are very well satisfied with the handling and management of their municipal affairs, or at all events are not sufficiently dissatisfied to be roused to action. Conditions which make such placidity possible no doubt are in themselves a matter for congratulation, but it is at least desirable that qualified electors should take a practical interest in the course of events and in particular should make sure that their names are entered on the roll. The Supplementary Roll is to close on March 31, ju,st over a fortnight hence, and those who continue to put off the important business of attending to their own enrolment will be apt to find that they have put. it off too long.
