HOLMES OF WANGANUI

WINS KING’S PRIZE. R. J. KING ONE POINT BEHIND. LOVELL CHAMPION TYRO. (“The Age” Special.) The Wairarapa Rifle Association’s thirty-second annual championship meeting concluded at the Papawai range yesterday in fine weather. Conditions generally were not quite so difficult as on the opening day, the principal hazards being a patchy light and a variable left wind. The completion of the, match at 9QO yards decided the final forty to compote for the King’s prize. Forty-eights by Clark (Ashburton) and Orr (Greytown) won the 900 yards match, Clark winning on the count back. The final forty were then announced

yards in conjunction with the King’s 40, in which Howard Feast (Greytown) put on a possible after two two’s for sighters, the effort bringing him up from 18th to 7th. A patchy 40 cost Orr pride of place, and he declined to third Pjace behind Holmes (Wanganui) and King (Opaki). Holmes did a confident 46, while a 44 by King just lost him the belt. Koppert, who was leading the aggregate on the first day’s shooting made a faulty shoot at 900 yards, failing to get on a prize list which, counted in 4215, but a 46 in the final fortv brought him up to fifth place. Clark (Ashburton) who won both the lonrange aggregate cups, maintained his position in the forty with a 42 which placed him equal with Orr for third prize in the belt. Wairarapa clubs were represented by ten competitors in the King’s Prize. i Holmes, winner of the belt, hails from Wanganui, and was a tyro last year. The tyro championship was won by C. Lovell, of Marlborough, whose shooting was a feature of the meeting. At the conclusion of the King’s match, President R. J. King presented tne belt to the winner whom he congratulated for his fine shooting so early m /is career as a rifleman. Mr. King paid a tribute .to the good work of the markers, the range officers, espeeiallv mentioning Messrs. B. Burch and A. B. Balfour, the secretary (Mr. A. L Webster) and the office staff (the Misses J. and M. Morris).
