RUSSIAN STATE JEWELS.
AUCTION AT CHRISTIE’S.
(Received Tuesday, 5.5 p.m.)
LONDON, March 15. Great interest centres in the auctioning at Chtffetie’s on Wednesday of a portion of the Russian State jewels, which experts think will possibly realise £250,000. Yesterday was view day and a stream of sightseers visited the auction rooms. When the doors were closed an inconspicuous limousine drove up and Queen Mary alighted and spent half an hour privately examining the pathetib treasures. The room presented the appearance of a fairy palace, resplendent with a nuptial crown of brilliant gems, pearl tiaras, and necklaces of the rarest gems.—(A. and N.Z.)
