HURLED OVER A CLIFF.
TRAGIC ACCIDENT. AT REMOTE LIGHTHOUSE. STATION. ■(Received Monday, 10.50 p.m.) HOBART, March 14. There was a tragic accident at Tas* man Island, the site of a lighthouse, off Cape Pillar. Five men were erecting a crane on the cliffs for the purpose of hasting stores to the lighthouse on Friday afternoon, when the crane collapsed. William Groombridge was hurled a hundred'feet down the cliffs and was killed. Joseph Patterson struck the edge of the cliff and a foot caught in a wire, where he hung suspended till rescued, injured. There were no means of communicating with the mainland except by carrier pigeons, which were sent out but were killed by hawks. On Saturday a passing vessel responded to distress signals and wirelessed to Hobart for assistance. A ship with a doctor arrived. After repeated attempts the doctor was landed but they were unable to take off Patterson until the sea calmed on Sunday morning, when he was lowered on a stretcher over the cliffs and taken to hospital in a critical condition.—(P.A.)
