SHOOTING AT PAPAWAI

WAIRARAPA CHAMPIONSHIP. CALDWELL WINS MIDFIELD AGGREGATE. KOPPERT LEADING FOR BELT. (“The Age’’ Special.) What promises to be one of tlie most successful championship meetings ever conducted by the Wairarapa Rifle Association commenced, yesterday at the Papawai range in favourable weather. Shooting conditions were patchy until the afternoon when the wind moderated to a steady right. Throughout the inoming, and for a while after tench, a varying fishtail and a changing light proved, sufficient to test the calibre of the best shots.

This fixture is the thirty-second meeting promoted by the Wairarapa Association, and with a reputation for liberality, the executive guaranteed a prize list of £415. The response from outside riflemen is well up to previous numbers, but Wairare.pa shots have not patronised their own association as well as they might. The nine rifle clubs in the district arc, represented by only thirty-three members which is ’rather poor recognition of the good work being done -by the Wairarapa executive. Acting as a good “pipe-opener‘ 1 for the National Rifle Association meeting which follows at Trentham, Papawai has attracted no fewer than nine belt winners, namely, A. 8. Ballinger (Pctone), King (Opaki), Caldwell (Karo--ri), Simmonds (Wanganui), Duncan (Westport), Anderson (Kaituna), West (Blenheim), Vennell (Te Wharau), and Croxton (Karori).

Through a difference of opinion wi«h the Defence authorities, who threatened to cancel the ammunition grant if the prize money for the service match ■were not increased, this match was eliminated.

Proceedings opeaed with, a ten-shot match at 300 yards. The shooting was of a high order, four competitors dropping only one point, while 45 ’s were counted out. “Hot” shooting continued at the 500 yards range, where three 49’s took top money. W. N. Kummer, of Te Wharau Club, had the best finish and won the match from Croxton, while Ycandle (Ashburton) and Balfour (iGreytown) each won £2.

Conditions were, tricky when the squads moved back to 600 yards, and the Masterton veteran, shot, R. J. King did the best 47, a similar tally falling to Wood (Christchurch) who took second money on the count back. In possibly the worst “patch” of the day, Caldwell, last year’s belt winner, put on a solid 49 at the second 600 yards match. The merit of the performance can be estimated from the fact that 46 was good enough for second money, while 41’s got into the prize list. The short Mtnge aggregate (four ranges) fell to Caldwell with a score of 183, R. J. King being second only one point behind, with R. Donald (Featherston) in third place. The first match at 800 yards was also fired, but owing to one of the cards nor being returned, the place-getters will not be scheduled until to-day. The shooting at this range was of the highest of standards, three possibles being registered, while three others' dropped only one point. The complete list for this match will be published to-marrow but the winners are as follows:— B. Holmes (Wanganui) 50 W. H. West (Blenheim) 50 F. Bolton (Opaki) 50 J. Te Whaiti (Tuhirangi) 49 Sharland (Renwick) ........ 49 T. Clark (Ashburton) 49 The teams match w'as won by Featherston, with Greytown only one point away in second place. With five matches gone, the leaders for the belt are as follows:— H. Koppert (Oamaru) 228 B. Holmes (Wanganui) 227 R. J. King (Opaki) .. 227 C. Whiteman (Upper Hutt) .. .. 227 T. Orr (Greytown) .. 226 R. Anderson (Taihape) 226 Under capable management, yesterday’s shooting proceeded very smoothly. The secretarial work, in the hands' of Mr. A. L, Webster, was thoroughly carried out -while on the range the members of the executive got the matches off without delay.
