ATHLETIC SPORTS.

MEETING AT KA'HAUTARA. INTERESTING CONTESTS. The Kahautara Amateur Athletic Sports Club held its annual meeting in Mr. W. E. Bidwill’s paddock at Kahautara on Saturday. The weather was perfect and there was a large attendance of the public. Messrs W. E.' Bidwill, J. Came Bidwill, A. D. - McLeod. M.P., and his secretary, Mr. were amongst those present. The athletic sports were ably controlled by the committee under the direction of the president, Mr. H. C. Playle. Tho honorary secretary. Mr. J. McCrae, was in charge of the horse events and is to bo congratulated for the manner in which he controlled them. The following- are the rseults:—ATHLETIC EVENTS. 100 yards Local Handicap.—W. Tilson, 1; T. Tully, 2; J. Jury, 3. MAURICEVILLE GATHERING. AN OUTSTANDING SUCCESS; The MauHceville District Sports Club on Saturday held its first annual gathering on Mr. A. C. Clsfrk’s property, an ideal ground, under beautiful weather conditions. It was the largest meeting of its kind held in the district f(?r many years. A feature was the horse events, which drew competitors from as far afield as Pahiatua, Bi deford, Gladstone, Mount Bruce and Masterton, besides a large number of local sports. Mr. J. Douglas (Tinui) gave the utmost satisfaction as judge for these events. Mr. F. Jennings acted as judge in the competition events for which large entries were received. The close finishes in the foot events were attributed to the excellent handicapping by Mr. W. Udy. Messrs D. Bennett and H. Freeman officiated as judges in the foot races. Mr. L. T. Daniell, marshal, with the assistance of a very energetic ground committee got the events decided right on time; in fact, it was a decidedly creditable performance for a new committee.

A very amusing event, free to all, wi's the chase of the wild pig, which after many exciting encounters was captured by Mr. J. Lequesne. The ladies’ committee organised a dance foT the evening, when about 80 couples graced the floor to the enjoyable strains of Mill’s Orchestra. The gate and ground takings amounted to £34 and the dance and varieus sale £lB, giving a total of £52. ,Following are the results of the various events: —
