In anticipation of demonstrations in connection with the anniversary celebration of the death of Sun Yat Sen, father of the revolution. special ■precautions \ were taken, but rain damped ardour.' The day was marked by few of the incidents expected. The general strike failed to .materialise. Five hundred armed Shantungese attempted to enter the International Settlement, but the attempt was frustrated by the British guards. Two hundred British troops ready for action, rushed up, and the Shantungese, real* ieing the futility of attempting to force a passage, retired. In the French section, a dispute took place between the extreme and moderate sections of the Kuomintang. Shots were fired and two were wounded. Tho French police intervened and restored order. Kuomintang agents were busy distributing handbills inciting the populace against foreigners ami collected huge crowds which the police with difficulty dispersed.—(A. and N.Z.). AN IMPENDING CLIMAX.
