UNITY OF ODDFELLOWS.
PROGRESS IN NEW ZEALAND.
AUCKLAND, March 9.
The ceremony of laying the foundation stones of the new headquarters of the Auckland District New Zealand branch of the Manchester Unity of Oddfellows took place this afternoon. Two stones were laid, one on each side of the proposed main entrance to the building. The ceremonies were conducted by the Grand Master for New Zealand, Brother Thomas Aitken, and the District Grand Master, Brother W. J. Best, respectively. The growth of the Manchester Unity Order in New Zealand was outlined by the Grand Master. He said the first lodge, the Loyal Nelson Lodge, was founded in Nelson in 1842. Since that date there had bjen a steady increase in the number of lodges and there were now in the Dominion 16 districts, IS of which were affiliated to the New Zealand branch, and four came directly ur.der the head office ’n Manchester. The order at present had a membership in New Zealand of 29,500. Of that number, 21,000 were under the New Zealand branch and 8500 were included in lodges affiliated directly with Manchester.—(P.A.)
