PULPIT AND STAGE.
THEATRE REFORM IN AMERICA. PURITY CAMPAIGN. NEW YORK, March 6. Following police raids on three allegedly most objectionable plays and the arrests and arraignment of the complete casts and the producers, continuous attempts have been made to reform the theatre from within. The latest effort, just announced, consists of the formation of a church committee, composed of the leading Anglican Bishop and minister, a Catholic priest, and a Jewish rabbi, which has announced that churches must share the responsibility for present conditions, because too often they are content to criticise the theatre wholesale instead of discriminating between worthy and unworthy plays and lending their influence to support those really meritorious. Sermons in many churches to-day dealt with the theatre; and in several cases addresses were made by theatrical people.—(A. and N.Z.)
