A LOYAL WELCOME.

DUKE AND DUCHESS OF YORK IN WELLINGTON.

PRESENTATION OF ADDRESSES.

The Duke and Duchess of York werQ officially welcomed in Wellington yesterday, when addresses were presented by the City Council and the Harbour Board. A message of welcome was presented also on behalf of the branches of the Navy League in New Zealand. The weather was at its best, and as the Royal visitors passed through the decorated streets they were cheered and warmly acclaimed.

In replying to the address from the city, the Duke said in part: “We ourselves have been trying during the last few weeks to strengthen the bonds which hold together the British Empire. (Applause). That Empire is the great common heritage for us all. (Applause). It embodies the ideals of truth, freedom, and Justice—those ideals for which many of your men and women gave their lives in the Great War. (Applause). There is no more glorious page in the history of New Zealand than the story of devotion and heroism of the New Zealand Forces—(applause)— and now that peace prevails once more let us see to it that the lessons taught us in those dark days are learned by our children—(applause)— for it is upon the rising generation that the future of this country depends, and, so long ns Anzac Day, with all that it stands for, is kept alive in their hearts, so long as they follow the high example set by the brave pioneers of old, this Dominion cannot fail to hold the place that she has won for herself in the front rank of the nations of the world. ’ ’ ' Applause). Last night, the Royal visitors were entertained at a ball at Government House. To-day they are to attend a parade of Girl Guides and Boy Scouts in the Parliamentary grounds in the forenoon, and later a Government lunchecn at the Town Hall. In the afternoon there is to be a garden party at Government House, and in the evening a dinner on board H.M.S. Renown. The Duke and Duchess are to leave on the Renown for Picton at 5 a.m. to-mor-row.
