SOUTH WAIRARAPA ITEMS.
(“The Age” Special.) A motor cycle accident occurred on Parkvale Road, Carterton, on Saturday evening at about 6 o’clock. Two young Maoris from Gladstone, named John Reiri, 22 years of age, and Thomas Haeta, 21 years of age, were returning home on a motor cycle. Reiri was in control of the machine. When rounding a bend on the road, near_the residence of Mr. A. E. Hall, the front wheel apparently struck a stone, oter-balancing the cycle, and throwing tho, riders heavily to the ground. Both young men were picked up unconscious and jiftcr first aid had been given by Dr. Tweed they were removed to the Greytowp Hospital. Reiri received a severe cut on the left eye, as well as minor abrasions about the face, while Haeta sustained a cut above the eye and an injured knee.
Kahautara Sports. The Kahautara athletic and horse sports elsewhere advertised, taka place on Saturday, March 12. Arrangements are well in hand and the fixture promises to be a great success. There will be a dance in the evening. _ j-jnr Featherston. ~ (“The Age” Special.) r Mrs. Saxon, who has been visiting her daughter, Mrs. Bloxam, of Featherston, returned to New Plymouth oa Wednesday. Mrs. D. H. S. Riddiford intends leaving for Rotorua shortly. A most enjoyable bridge evening was held at the Plunket rooms on Friday, night by the Featherston branch of the Plunket Society, the hostesses for the occasion being Mesdames Donald, G. Nelson and Campbell-Pearce. A large number of players were present. The local funds will benefit to the extent of about £6. This is tho first of a series of evenings to be given by members of the society. A special meeting of the Featherston Swimming Club was held on Thursday evening, Mr. J. W. Card presiding. A set of rules was passed. It waa decided to apply for a black costume with blue monogram as the elub colours. It was suggested that a dance be held in aid of the club funds, but the general opinion was that it would be better to wait until the club was properly established before giving an entertainment.
On Saturday matches were played at Featherston between the Island Bay and Featherston bowling clubs. Following are the results (Island Bay mentioned first): —Reese, Leighton, Wilson, Heron 22, beat Deas, Benton, Higgison and Sinclair 13; Wilson, Bidlpy, Osborne, Taylor 17, beat Higgison, Bladen, Orams, Rolls 13; Estall, Innis, Condor, Jenkins beat Caldwell, Merlett, Roberts, Field 12; Estall, Innis, Jenkins, Condor 21, beat Merlett, Deas, Bladen, Rea 18; Wilson, Ridley, Taylor, Osborne 21, lost to Roberts, Higgison, Orams, J. Higgison 22; Rees, Leighton, Wilkinson, Heron 17, lost to Caldwell, Crawford, Bolls, Sinclair 26.
The Featherston Rifle Club held a practice shoot during the week-end at 800 and 300 yards ranges. It is intended to hold a musketry course next Saturday.
