THE CWM DISASTER.
PERILOUS RESCUE WORK.
MORE BODIES RECOVERED.
(Received Friday 7.7 p.m.)
LONDON, March 4. Rescue parties at the Cwm Colliery were threatened at every step with the most deadly gas fumes, but managed to penetrate a wall of rock and located twenty-four of twenty-nine bodies. The Black Vein is described as the scene of a veritable slaughter-house) full of (maimed and mutilated bodies. In another section of the workings, nine bodies were found sealed in perfectly natural position on stone slabs, some leaning on their elbows, lolling back as though talking to each other, and witt their eyes wide open. So lifelike were they that the rescuers were thrilled with hope, but when they touched the bodies they fell. It appears that they retreated behind a safety door at the first sound of the explosion to await rescue, but gas came through the door.—(A. and N.Z.)
