McCARTHY TRUST GRANT.
TO MASTERTON ORPHANAGE. ACTION BY METHODIST CONFERENCE. ' AUCKLAND, March 4. A decision was made iby the New Zealand Methodist Conference to-day, to take n(y further advantage of the benefits of the T. G. McCarthy Trust, in view of the fact that it was stated that it derived much of its revenue from interests allied to the liquor trade. A lengthy discussion was held in committee on a remit from the Hawke’s Bay-Manawatu ’Synod strongly protesting against the Wellington Methodist Charitable and Education Endowment Trust applying for money from the McCarthy Trust for the Masterton Orphanage, which has received £2OO a year for the past three years. On the conference resuming in open council, it was stated that no further advantage of the trust would be taken and that, this year’s application for a donation for the Masterton Orphanage would be withdrawn. It was decided that if the amount had already been granted, it would 'be returned. Attention was also drawn to the fact that the name of the Public Trustee had been appended to a statement advertising the sale of liquor, and a resolution was passed protesting against this.—(P.A.)
