ENGLAND’S MOTOR ACE.
PARRY THOMAS KILLED. FATAL ATTEMPT TO REGAIN LOST TITLE. LONDON, March 5. Mr. Parry Thomas, the world’s foremost racing motorist, was killed while attempting to break the world’s speed record to-day on Dendine .Sands, South Wales, in an endeavour to wrest the speed championship from Malcolm Campbell, who recently did 174 miles per hour. He had attained a speed of 170 miles per hour, when tho driving chain of a back wheel snapped, and fouled the cogs, wrapping itself round the wheels. At terrific speed the ear skidded violonly, and pieces of mechanism were hurled a hundred yards away. Then tho car somersaulted twice, and again skidded, almost broadside on. The rear wheel bounded like a rocket towards the sea. The .chain unwound and broke through the mudguard with staggering force, striking Thomas in the neck, tearing off his scalp from neck to forehead, virtually decapitating him. Death must have been instantaneous.— (A. and N.Z.)
