SOUTH WAIRARAPA ITEMS.
(“The Age” Special.) The death took place at Grey town on Wednesday evening of Mr. Thomas Udy, one of the district’s pioneers. Deceased, who had been ailing for some time, was the fourth son of Mr. Hart Udy, senr., who came' to the Dominion in the ship Roxburgh in 1840. In May next, Mr. Udy would have been 87 years of age.
Building Society. At a meeting of shareholders of the Wairarapa Terminating Building Society on Wednesday evening, the tender of Mr. A. J. Parton at £l5 10s 6d for one £l5O, and that of Mr. A. Phillpotts at £l5 for the second £l5O in the No. 1 group were accepted. Mr. L. G. Harding’s tender of £260 for £6OO in the Vo. 2 group was accepted. In all, five tenders were received, ranging from £3l to £65 for each £l5O. It was decided at a directors’ meeting held afterwards, that the next meeting to dispose of £6OO by ballot in No. 2 group be held in Martinborough. Tho annual meeting will be held in April, the retiring directors, who will be eligible for re-election, being Messrs. A. J. Parton, H. R. Biss'and G. Hughan. Sports Meeting.
Entries for the electric light sports meeting ,to be held on Wednesday evening under the auspices of the Carterton Amateur Athletic Club, close on Monday evening at 7 p.m. Arrangements have been made for buses to run from Masterton.
School Essays. The following ' awards have been made for the essays written by pupils of the Greytown District High School on the recent* picnic trip to Petone:— Standard III.: Bina Manihera 1, H. Robinson 2. Standard IV.: Roy Richards 1, Brian Skect 2. Standard V.: Marjorie Wood 1. Standard VI.: Ellen Robinson, 1. High School (A): Hector Slight 1; (B), Gladys Thompson 1, Logan Keltic 2; (C), Elsie Gregor 1. The judge remarked that the essays were good. Bowling. The New South Wales bowling team to visit the Wairarapa next week, will play the representatives on the afternoon of 2ffarch 9. Before the party leave next day, a motor tour through the district will probably be arranged for them, GREYTOWN. (“The Age” Special.)
Mr. W. H. Diddams has found it necessary to go to Christchurch for helath reasons.
Miss M. Burton, matron of the Gerytown Hospital, has resumed duties, geatly improved in health after two months’ absence on leave. Mr. F. V. Kempton has returned to Grey town from, a trip to. Nelson and the West Coast.
Mrs. Gregor, West Street, is at present indisposed. Her medical advisor has ordered a complete rest for some weeks.
Mr. and Mrs. Cyril Grigg, now resident in Taranaki, arc visiting Mrs. Grigg’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Z. Bouzaid, senr. P. and T. Matters.
A delegation representing the Chamber of Commerce and business people waited on the Postmaster on Wednesday, relative to improvement of the telephone service, and postal matters generally were fully discussed to the public advantage. Fruit Harvest.
Apple picking is in full swing and satisfactory harvests are anticipated. Small fruit is finished and profitable yields were garnered. One resident, with a quarter-acre crop, cleared £4O 'from raspberries just come into bearing. Racing and Trotting.
The win of Mr. S. W. Feast’s Laoy Ideal in open company at Dannevirke on Wednesday was very popular locally. Lady Ideal is an honest mare, who always gives her supporters a good run for their investments.
Several stewards of the Trotting Club attended the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting at Petone each day. Mr. J. Russell, formerly a well-known trainer at Featherston, is a visitor to the district. Ho is now resident at Christchurch and ?s associated with F. D. Jones’s stables at Sockburn. .. .. Half-Holiday. The question whether Masterton is to adopt the mid-week half-holiday instead of the existing Saturday halfholiday is being watched with interest by Greytown business people. The matter was fully discussed by the Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday, and from a business point of view reversion to Thursday appears to be favoured. The weight of sporting opinion, however, appears to be a deciding bar to any change.
FEATHERSTON. (“The Age” Special.) , In a match for the champion pairs, played on the . Featherston bowling green on Monday, Sinclair and Rolls defeated Clark and Adamson, 26/12. At the monthly sitting of the Featherston Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Messrs. W. Barton and R. Barton, J.’sP., judgment was given for plaintiff t>y default in the following cases:—F. W. Smith v. H. Blake, £56 19s 3d, costs £2 8s; W. Savage v. S. Berrington, £B, costs, 18s and solicitor’s fee 15s 6d; J. B. Crawford v. S. Barrington, £9, costs 15s and solicitor’s fco 15s 6d. For allowing cattle to wander, F. Gooding and R. Bridgewater were each fined 5s and costs £1 4s. The case, W. Savage v. Alatai Mihaera, was adjourned till next Court day. Croquet Clubs. During the 1 week several matches were played for the senior cup by the A players of the Featherston Croquet Club. The following are the results:— Mrs. Vincent lost to Mrs. Wiekens, MrsO’Brien lost to Airs. Williams, Airs. Ayro lost to Mrs. Combs. The members of the Alasterton Croquet Club were entertained to afternoon tea by the Haunui Club yesterday afternoon, when some very good matches were played. The weather was excellent, and the green in good condition. A most enjoyable afternoon was spent by all Present. The following are the results of some of the games:—Mesdames Barry and Adamson (Haunui) defeated Mesdames Weller and Finlayson, 26/11; Airs. Purchase and Mr. Dunderdale defeated Mr®.
Chalmers and Miss Card (Haunui) 26/23; Mesdames Staniforth and Golder defeated Mesdames Wakely and Simpson, (Haunui) 26/19. Other games were unfinished.
