HOSPITAL CONTROL.
OPENING OF CONFERENCE. UNIFORMITY OF STAFFING. CHRISTCHURCH, March 2. The annual conference of delegates of the New Zealand Hospital Boards’ Association was opened, to-day by the Minister of Health (the Hon. J. A. Young). The Minister, addressing the conference, said the existing Act was wide and comprehensive enough to permit of the Dominion’s hospitals being regarded as community hospitals in the widest sense. It had been, made clear by the Commission which sat at Palmerston North, that not only ratepayers and contributors, but others had the right to enter Dominion hospitals. He trusted that the principle would never be departed from. (Applause.) As to little difficulties with the medical pro: fessions, he thought that the members of that profession possessed sufficient public spirit to assist boards and th?e Government. They would find the profession standing behind the* Government and the boards. He stood for the present system of elective boards The following recommendation by the executive was adopted: “That the Executive be authorised to confer with a like number of representatives of friendly societies and with representatives of the Department with a view of formulating a uniform agreement acceptable by all boards and friendly societies.
Dr. T, H. A. Valintine, Director-Gen-eral of Health ,said the time had come when there should be uniformity in the staffing of hospitals and he proposed to call together a committee of medical men to discuss staffing and administration. They would be called together wit'hin six weeks. The following officers were elected: President, W. Wallace (Auckland); vice-presidents, W. E. S. Knight (Dunedin), C. M. Luke (-Wellington), H. J. Otley (Christchurch); committee, the officers and F. Gillanders (Hawera), J. Matheson (Invercargill), H. McCarroll (Aratapu), J. B. Andrew (Napier), Hon. Mclntyre. (Buller); 'auditor, G. F. Judd (Wellington). It was decided to hold the next con fcrenpe at Palmerston North.—(P.A.)
