WITH THE HARRIERS.
THE YEAR IN RETROSPECT. UNQUALIFIED SUCCESS. A period of uninterrupted progress is recorded in the ninth annual report of the Masterton Harrier Club, which states that the year under review was one of the most successful from every point of view.
The active membership was fortythree, while the average attendance at weekly outings was t.wo-itirds of that number. The Sanders Cup, competed for between the Hutt Valley and Masterton clubs, was easily won by the southerners. The club was again successful in, retaining possession of Whyte Mac Kay Shield which accompanied provincial cross-country honours. The event was held on a Masterton course, and for the first, time on record was run in A. and B. grades, which proved most successful both to the competitors, and to the public who assembled to witness the race. The individual championship fell to E. J. Hoffer, who also won the club championship. Attached to the latter event for the first time was the Randolph Rose Commemoration Cup which the winner holds for one year. The Shaw rose bowl, presented by the patron pf the club, was competed for over a series of three races, which resulted in favour of J. Kitchener. W. Ross was runner-up. In a keen, competition for the Heffer rose bowl, L. A. Keats won by a narrow margin from H. Henderson. The Cameron Cup, presented by the president) proved a great inducement to members to attend the weekly runs. members reached the final, which was wOn by J. Hunter, who won the trophy outfight. W. Winhall was runner-up. During the season eight members from Wanganui visited Masterton and the local members returned the visit later in the season, when twenty-two runners competed at Wanganui and were successful in winning the teams' race. Many invitations were received from supporters to hold races from their residences, and the members greatly appreciated their ; hospitality. The club also expressed i its thanks to those w’ho billeted visiting runners during the season, and to the donors ef trophies. During the year the club was unfortunate in losing the services of two’ esteemed members in H. Orman and W. Ross, who wore transferred away from the district.
