NAVAL LIMITATION.
BRITAIN’S REPLY TO AMERICA.
POSITION OF DOMINIONS.
LONDON, February 27.
The Press Association understands that the British reply to President Coolidge’s proposals for a conference on naval limitation will be presented to Washington to-morrow, when Sir Austen Chamberlain will make a statement in the -House of Commons.
The “Daily Herald’s” diplomatic correspondent says that the Domi nions’ replies are almost unanimously unfavourable to any limitation of Britain’s cruiser strength. Canada also has considered President Coolidge’s 1 plan sympathetically, but Britain, not desiring to embarrass the President by a negative reply, will try to obtain the Dominions’ assent to a conference between Britain, the United States, and Japan with the agenda carefully limited in order to execlude tho possibility of a reduction of the present cruiser strength.—(A. and N.Z.)
Another message states that several replies from tho Dominions concerning President Coolidge’s naval disarmament proposals have reached London. The “Daily Telegraph’s” diplomatic correspondent says that some are fairly definite, while others seek further information, particularly the British Admiralty’s views. More time, therefore, is required before a considered join answer for Britain and the Dominions can he sent to Washington.
