COUNTY AFFAIRS.

WAIRARAPA SOUTH COUNCIL. MONTHLY MEETING., The Wairarapa South County Council met at Carterton on Saturday. Present: Councillors T. V. Moore (chairman), F. C, Cotter, C. A. Cameron, D. McGregor, G. Foreman, J. Hodder, F. C. Court and C. Reid. The treasurer neported a credit balance of .£54 Is 2d Receipts for the month £1313 7s 2'd, which included refund from the Main Highways Board, £626 2s 3d. Accounts totalling £1313 7s 2d were passed for payment. The ranger reported having dealt with eight head of stock for the month.

It was decided that disc plate-hold-ers be supplied free with heavy traffic Jicenses for 1927-28.

W. Snell, Ahiaruhe, wrote asking permission to graze stock on one mile of a blind road, owing to the danger of fire from the dry grass.—Resolved that permission be not given to .graze stock on the roads.

An offer of a quarter-acre section in Belvedere Street adjoining the county yards, for £l6O was referred to a committee- for a report as to value. The tender of O. R. Fairbrother at 6s 6d per yard was accepted for metalling Driscoe Road.

The Main Highways Board notified that pot holes need filling and water tables required attention on the section of main highway MartinbsroughMasterton via Gladstone. Also that a section of highway, Wellington- Napier via Wairarapa was in bad order and required attentien.—To be attended to.

The Wairarapa P. and A'. Society ' forwarded a statement of expenses of . the recent visit of Mr L. B. Beale, ‘ His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner. ; The total was £l5 7s 3d and the council’s share £1 10s 6d. Martin Kerins advised that the deviation at Waipoapoa was not very safe, and that heavy motor lorries could not go up the grade. G. W. Kempton is to be given no- i tico to clean out a drain through his property. | The overseer was authorised to do repairs on Admiral Roarl. Robert Ngatuere informed the ' council that if they did not do some- ' thing to prevent the Waiohine and I Mangatarere River flooding his pro- ' petty, he intended to petition tho - Government to put up a stop bank to [ prevent water getting on to the main i road and land.—-No action was taken. | REPORTS ON WORKS. The engineers reported that Booth’s' Creek Bridge had been completed, ex- I eept for asphalt surfacing. Satisfac- i tory progress was being made with j the Waipoapoa Bridge, and steps taken to lessen tho inconvenience to traffic. Steel had been delivered and the left bank abutment and wings constructed a* Hinaki Stream Bridge. Piles were ready for White Bridge, Mangaterere Stream, and driving .would shortly be j put in hand. Satisfactory progress * had been made with the bituemn pene- ; tration course, just upon 60 chains i southward from the Waingawa Bridge * being now completed with metal ready { laid for about another ten chains. The concrete bridge at 6 miles 75 chains j was completed, 'and would be opened j for traffic early in the coining week. '

The Carrington, water race overseer reported having carried out general maintenance work. A fairly good flow ef water had been running but the bed of the river was about three feet lower than it used to be and if it got any lower it would be impossible to get as much water into tho race. The Taratahi water race overseer reported that,the river had been very low, anil the foot had to be deepened to -keep the water on the intake. A 'good lead of water had been maintained. Leaks on clay country have caused a lot of trouble. The big filling at Penrose was inspected with the councillors, and it was decided t» put in a 12-foot fluming, four feet wide by a foot deep on a concrete foundation and wings, and the pipes at present in use bo removed and: placed i-n the Waihakeke race to replace a small sot. General cleaning had been carried out.

The overseer reported that the approaches to the suspension bridge at Tea Creek Road had been completed. Siow progress was being made with metalling on Tea Creek. Tho crusher had -been working ahflost every day during the month and fair progress had been made with the surfacing work. Two pipe culverts had been put in and some- of the points cut bm-k on the,, East Coast Road. Two straining blocks had been put in at Gladstone Bridge., Patch metalling had been carried out on a number of the roads in* the county.
