The Harvest Festival Services in connection with St. Mark’s Church* Carterton, will be held on Sunday. Gifts of fruit, produce and vegetables will be welcomed. Personal.
Mr. E. Jones, of Carterton, will parade with the Wairarapa veterans at Masterton on the occasion of the visit of the Duke and Duchess of York. In 1875 Mr. Jones was a leading seaman, on H.M.S. Raleigh, and formed one of the bodyguard of his late Majesty, King Edward VII, when, as Prince of Wales he visited India. Boyal Train Engine. The engine to be used on the Boyal train between Woodville and Cross Creek arrived at the southern depot on Wednesday evening. It is a Claes A, used in ordinary traffic on this section, and has been in the Petone Workshops, where it has undergone a. thorough overhaul and general polish. The brass-work and bright steel parts have received attention, and the cab has been provided with accommodation for two engine-drivers, and a fireman. It is understood that there will be two drivers on the Boyal train throughout the tour. A telephone has been installed and brackets fixed on the front to carry the Coat of Arm#, with flags on each side. The engine is painted black, outlined in red, and the wheel rims white. Within the next few days, the engine will be tried out in the ordinary service, but will not be decorated as on the occasion of drawing the Royal train. Early Closing.
The Carterton Tradesmen’s Associa> tion has decided to invite local business places to close at 11 a.m. on the occasion of the visit of the Duke and Duchess of York to Masterton, and at 12 noon on the date of the PonatahiAhiaruhe sports a/t Carterton. Art Union.
The Minister of Internal Affairs has granted permission to the Bowling Club to conduct an art union for works of art.
Working Men’s Club. The committee of the Greytown Working Men’s Club has decided that in future due notice by circular be given all members of the dates of the half-yearly and annual meetings. The question of establishing a benovolent fund is to be given consideration. Karitane Appeal.
The Featherston branch of the Plunket Society has received the following additional donations to the Karitane appeal: Mrs. A. E. Pearce, £5; Messrs C. Matthews, £3 3s; J. W. Fellingham, £2 2s, and Dr. Price, £1 Is. Incipient Eire.
The Featherston Fire Brigade was called out on Wednesday morning to an outbreak of fire in the washhouse at the Boyal Hotel. The brigade managed to check the outbreak before muck damage was done. When the brigade went to use their motor, it was discovered that some despicable person had drained the tank of four gallons of benzine.
FEATHERSTON. (“The Age” Special). A party of bowlers from the Victoria Club (Wellington) visited Featherston yesterday to try conclusions with the local club. The weather was perfect, and the visitors were loud in their praise of the Featherston green, which compared, they said, more than favourably with the Wellington greens. Before setting out for home in the afternoon, they offered the Featherston Club hearty thanks for its hospitality.
