FARMERS’ COMPETITION.

LIST OF AWARDS. CHAMPIONSHIP TO G. SHAW. The Wairarapa Farmers’ Union annual fleece competition concluded, yesterday with the announcement of the results, and a demonstration and lecture by Mr. William Perry (Penrose) who’ acted as one of the judges. The display of fleeces created great interest among the members of the farming community who assembled in good force to inspect the entries and to hear the announcement of the results.

The championship fleece was displayed by Mr. G. Shaw (Te Orc Ore). In arriving at the total points for each fleece the judges (Messrs W. Perry and R. Gillon) valued the fleece in pence which was multiplied by the weight and added to the points awarded for quality.

CLASS 1, 36 COUNT AND UNDER. 1. and K. Sutherland (Hinakura), weight 121bs. 140z5.; value, 12fcl; quality, 40; total, 204 points. Judges’ comments: Straightout 36 count; good tips; lacks elasticity. • 2. Groves Brothers (Bushgrove), 12 lbs. Sozs.; 36; total, 195 points. Comments: Good staple; coarse fibre; somewhat harsh and brittle. 3. H. G. Groves (Marangi), lllbs. 2 czs.; 12:31; 45.; total, 1861 points. Comments: Staple and tip very strong fibre and great elasticity; very close to pure Lincoln. 4. T. Cripps (Sevenoaks,), lOlbs. 8 ozs.; 13d; 40; total, 1761 points. Comments: Favourable notice; slightly hard on tips. CLASS 2, 40 COUNT. 1. Beetham Brothers (Kourarau), 11 lbs. 120z5.; 13d; 40; total, 192 points. Comments: Very straight staple, but no waste. Good handling and colour; a little hard on tips. 2. J. S. Holmes (Matahiwi), lOlbs. 140z5.; 13d; 35; total 176 points. Comments: Useful fleece; weight and density with full staple. 3. H. McLaren (Ngakonui), 81bs. 12 czs.; 13£d; 45; total 161 points. Comments: Bright fleece; excellent tips without break. CLASS 3, 44 COUNT.

1. H. McLaren (Ngakonui), lOlbs. 8 ozs.; 15-Jd; 49; total, 214 points. Comments: Outstanding fleece; well grown; good tips and weight; finished staple without waste.

2. A. and K. Sutherland (Hinakura), 121bs. 4ozs.; 15d; 44; total, 212 points. Comments: Good class; strong wool; slightly hard. *

3. A. and K. Sutherland (Hinakura), 91bs Bozs.; 15d; 40 points; total, 182 points. Comments: Good average wool: not so pleasing as others selected in class.

4. H. G. Groves (Marangi), 8 lbs.; 15d; 45; total, 165 points. Comment: Beautiful handling and even; rather short staple.

CLASS 4, 46 COUNT. 1. G. Shaw (Te Ore Ore), lllbs. 8 ozs.; 16d; 49; total; 233 points. Comments: Very outstanding character and quality. Champion fleece. 2. N. Sheet (Morison’s Bush), 91bs. lOozs.; 16d; 47; total, 201 points. Comments: Another outstanding fleece in character and quality. Lost points through lack of length. 3. A. J. Speedy (Awatea), lOlbs.; 15|d; 44; total, 199 points. Comments: Good staple, but rather overshadowed by first and second fleeces. CLASS 5, 48 COUNT AND OVER. 1. J. Hudson (Waimimi), 91bs. 4ozs.; ISJd; 47; total, 215 points. Comments: Good fleece of fine quality showing Corriedale type. 2. A. and K. Sutherland (Hinakura), 81bs. lOozs.; 17d; 47; total 193$ points. Comments: Good type fleece; fairly even; short in staple. 3. Groves Brothers (Bushgrove), 61bs. 4ozs.;, 17d; 44; total, 150 points. Rather small fleece, but good quality. SPECIAL PRIZES. Heaviest fleece in competition: Groves Brothers, 181bs. lOozs. Best fleece from Tinui district: J. Hudson (Waimimi). AMATEUR JUDGING. I. C. Jackson (Kopuaranga), 15 points, 1. R. G. Lee (Weraiti), and G. A. Blako (Masterton), tie, 14 points, 2. At the conclusion of the competition Mr. Perry gave a demonstration especially in regard to fleeces which had been selected by a number of amateur judges, but were not allotted prizes. Mr. Ferry remarked favourably on the improved quality of the wool as compared with last year’s competition.
