NAVAL LIMITATION.

A THREE-POWER MEETING. AMERICAN HOPES. (Received Wednesday, 7.20 p.m.) WASHINGTON, February 22. Mr. Baldwin’s address endorsing President Coolidge’s disarmament proposal has strengthened the belief here that efforts will be made to convene a threo-Powcr meeting at Geneva for limiting the construction of auxiliary naval craft. There has been an intimation that it might be advisable to couple with such agreements as might arise from the meeting an understanding whereby the limitations would become ncn-operative- once France or Italy had built up to* a certain specified point. It was announced to-day that President Coolidge’s memorandum was also sent to Argentina, Brazil, Chile and to other Powers of Europe and Asia as aa act of courtesy. It is understood that Argentina informed the United States that it felt no naval conference should be held until the result of the Geneva Conference was seen.—(A. and N.Z.) BRITAIN AND AMERICA. MR. BALDWIN’S WISH. LONDON, February 22. The English-speaking Union celebrated George Washington’s birthday ey opening new headquarters at Dartmouth House. Mr. Baldwin, in an inaugural speech, emphaffised the improved Anglo-American relations. He said that the Irish question, formerly dangerous; could never again spoil Imperia! relations. ‘ American historians had corrected a form er tendency to inaccuracy, and some of the best American literary work was now done in the healm of historical criticism. Speaking individually, he said that he would bo glad if further progress towards peace were possible on the lines of the Washington 'Conference.—(A. and N.Z.)
