BOROUGH MAINTENANCE.
WORK FOR THE MONTH. The Borough Engineer in his monthly report to the council? last night, stated that five new services and nine renewals -were put in. on the water and drainage system. The work of relaying the Cole Street s fewer is under way. So far two chains in Chapel Street and five chains in Cole Street have been relayed and completed. The new sewer is being laid approximately a foot deeper and 9-ineh pipes are being used in of present 6-inch. These alterations are being carried out to give more efficient drainage to household properties and to allow for future extensions that may come into this sewer, such as Wrigley Estate and Kummer’s Property. The existing sewer has hardly a sound joint in the line and the pipe line is broken at practically every lamphole and manhole. The connections into properties are just as defective and the first four have been relaid. The house drains are being tested before being connected up to the new connection and if found defective notice will be .given the owner to remedy the defects. The grading, metalling and consilidation of King and Chapel Streets have been completed. King Street and portion of Chapel Street have been given the first coat of tar. A start will be made this week with the new road work in Pownall Street, starting at the Cole Street end. Lincoln and South Roads have been given another coat of tar. River Road and Johnstone Street paths have been regraded and tar scaled. Queen Street kerbing has been completed and the regrading of path to new kerk will be put in hand in a day or so. The new 30-inch concrete pipe culvert in Totara Street is under way and the two Railway Road pipe culverts and Columba Road deck culvert will be started next week.
