CARTERTON BOROUGH.
MONTHLY MEETING- OF COUNCIL. (“The Age” Special). The Carterton Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor (Mr. W. Fisher) presiding. The treasurer reported, receipts for the month £1697 13s lOd (District Fund) and £330 12s 5d (Gasworks account). Rates received totalled £1398 Jos lOd. Accounts totalling £5OO 7s (District Fund) and £192 6s 11 (Gasworks) were passed for payment. The net value of gas sold for January was £213 17s (for 1926, £213 15s 3d)’. The Wairarapa Automobile Association forwarded a copy of a resolution ‘sent to the Masterton Borough Council in reference to pedestrian traffic on motor highways. The Wairarapa Live Stock Auctioneers’ Association was granted a saleyards license.
The Census and Statistics office, Wellington, advised that the second edition of the Local Authorities’ Handbook would be published, not later than April. i
The Gas Committee recommended that the 2-inch main in Garrison Street bo extended to Mr. Trask’s re side-nee. The matter of disposal of lamp posts was left in the hands of the gas manager.
Gas manufacture for January, 526,- | 000 cubic feet. Gas consumed, 443,400 : cubic feet; used at works, 32,000 cubic * feet; unaccounted for, 50,600 cubic | feet. Some 37 tons of coal were carbonised, yielding 14,200 cubic feet per ; ton. The gas manager reported that the 1 amount of gas manufactured for Janu- i ary was 526,000 cubic feet. The aver- i age per day for the month was 17,800 ' cubic v fcet. Two gas f cookers and one Hottentot cooker have been installed. I There are 37 old lamp posts. Three ’ householders in Redwood Street desire to be connected up with the gas service. i The Works Committee reported hav- I ing granted permits for the erection * of a building in Garrison Street for A. j J. Parton, to cost £675, and a dwelling \ for Miss Fitzgerald in Morcton Road, ’ to cost £650. | The overseer reported that during the month path tarring had been carried • cut along High Street, Costly Street, j Park Road, v Memorial Square, Dixon ‘ Street,. Tyne Street, Kent Street, J?em- ' broke Street, and the Main road north. ■ It was recommended that the south < /side of Kent Street be tarred if tar is available.
The sanitary inspector reported that the condition of the borough was satisfactory. Two cases of blocked drains in Belvedere Street, and one in south Carterton, as well as two rubbish heaps had been attended to. Water troughs, taps, ji ml pipes hai been attended to. Notice had been given co cut down blackberry and elderberry.
It was resolved that all dogs othe* than working dogs bo charged the regulation fee of 10s. It was mentioned that some owners had registered their dogs as rabbit dogs for 2s 6d.
On the motion of the Mayor it was decided to place a supplementary water supply scheme before the ratepayers .to cost £9OOO. The proposal is to bring the eight-inch main from the end of the present nine-inch main to connect up at Broadway with the present main. It is proposed to do reticulation out of ordinary revenue. It is proposed to do one mile a year. This scheme is part of a £17,000 scheme which was substantially defeated at- a recent poll.
