ALARMING DEATH RATE REPORTED. LONDON, February 21. Influenza is severest in the north of England, particularly nt Liverpool, where the death-rate has become alarming, and undertakers in all the districts are employing extra, hands. Offices are often only half-staffed, while many schools have been closed. Working staffs at mills and workshops are also seriously depleted. At least three cases occurred during the week-end of husbands and wife dying practically, simultaneously.—(A. and N.Z.). AN OFFICIAL STATEMENT. ADVICE FROM HIGH COMMISSIONER. WELLINGTON, February 22. The latest advice from the High Commissioner regarding the influenza epidemic shows a general decline in England and in Europe. The provincial returns for the week ending February 12 give 159 influenza deaths in London, and in 105 great towns including London, 759 deaths. In Greater London, deaths numbered 28(k Pneumonic notifications in London numbered 2669, and in England and Wales, including London, 3006. A decrease of cases is reported in Berlin and increase in Bulgaria, for the week ending February 5. A decrease is reported also in Copenhagen. but the disease is still widely prevalent in a mild form in Denmark. It is generally abating in Spain, France, Hungary, Poland, Switzerland, and the Netherlands.—(P.A.).
