HIGHER EDUCATION.
MEETING OF UNIVERSITY COUNCIL. AGRICULTURE AND MATRICULATION. AUCKLAND, February 21. At a meeting of the New Zealand University Council, a proposal by the late Board .of Studies that terms of examinations for exemplified students should be eliminated was adopted. It was explained that these students would still have to keep terms, although they would not sit for terms examinations.
Another proposal that physiology should be removed from the matriculation examination was approved, but another that agriculture should be also cut out was referred to tho Academic Board.
Mr. F. Milnor, speaking as a headmaster, said the matriculation examination should be a test in fundamental subjects only. * However, there was likely to be an outcry in the Press if agriculture were cut out. The matter should be reconsidered. It was decided to recommend the Education Department to amend the bursary regulations so that not more than five bursaries might be awarded yearly at each university college to students showing ability.
It was decided to hold the next meeting of the council at Christchurch, b&' ginning on February 15, 1928. In sub* sequent years, meetings will be held in January. It was resolved to grant the following degrees: D.S., Kenneth Phillips. Ph. D., G. H. Cunningham and J R. Hosking. B. Med. Science, N. L. Edson.
Mr A. E. Flower gave notice to move that the University Entrance Board be requested to consider the whole subject of matriculation and entrance scholarship examinations with reference to: (1) standard; (2) syllabus; (3) system of marking; (4) accrediting by means of leaving certificates; and to forward its recommendations to the council through the Academic Board. Notice of the following motion was given by Mr. T.K. Sidey: “That the question whether the council should be empowered to grant degrees in theology be referred for consideration and report to a committee.” The following motion was cadried: “That power shall be given to tho council to determine from time to time whether the offices of Principal and Vice-Chancellor shall or shall not -be held by one, and the same person, and that the Government to asked to amend the Act accordingly.”—(P.A.)
